Brian C. Sargent, a 49-year-old resident of Bowling Green, Ohio, pleaded guilty on Apr. 10 to receiving and distributing files depicting the sexual abuse of children over nearly seven years.

The case highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat the distribution of child sexual abuse materials online. Sargent admitted guilt to charges related to the receipt and distribution of such materials, commonly referred to as Child Sexual Abuse Materials (CSAM).

According to court documents, investigators identified Sargent in July 2025 during an operation targeting offenders sharing CSAM on peer-to-peer platforms. In August 2025, authorities executed a search warrant at his home and seized his laptop and cellphone. A forensic analysis uncovered almost 700 files showing minors engaged in sex acts and bondage. The investigation determined that Sargent had been involved in receiving and distributing these materials from November 2018 through August 2025 while employed with the Ohio Investigative Unit.

Sargent is scheduled for sentencing on July 22 and faces a minimum sentence of five years up to a maximum of twenty years in prison. The final sentence will be determined by a federal district court judge after reviewing U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other legal factors.

The United States Secret Service and members of the Ohio State Highway Patrol conducted the investigation leading up to Sargent’s indictment. Assistant United States Attorney Tracey Ballard Tangeman for the Northern District of Ohio is leading the prosecution.

This case was brought under Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating child exploitation online led by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices across the country.
