The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio will participate in National Night Out events taking place in Cleveland and other communities throughout the region.

National Night Out is a yearly event designed to foster relationships between law enforcement agencies and local residents, aiming to improve neighborhood safety. The campaign is observed by millions of people across thousands of communities on the first Tuesday of August.

Started in 1984 with support from the Bureau of Justice Assistance at the U.S. Department of Justice, National Night Out is managed by the National Association of Town Watch, a nonprofit organization that coordinates community crime prevention efforts nationwide. Additional details about the program can be found at https://natw.org/.

Events are organized by local police departments and trained volunteers, providing an environment where officers and neighbors interact in positive settings such as block parties, cookouts, parades, safety demonstrations, seminars, youth activities, and visits from emergency personnel. According to organizers, “National Night Out sends a message that neighbors are united and working together to keep their communities and each other safe.”

Scheduled events in Northern Ohio include gatherings in Cleveland at Steelyard Commons (3447 Steelyard Dr.) from 4-8 p.m., Lake County-Painesville at Veteran’s Park (56 S. Park Place) from 6-8 p.m., Shaker Heights at 3441 Tuttle Rd from 6-8 p.m., and Toledo at Glass City Metropark (1505 Front St.) from 3-7 p.m., all on Tuesday, August 5.
