A tragic incident involving a kitchen appliance has led to a legal battle, highlighting the potential dangers of everyday household products. On December 16, 2025, Leighton Horomanski, a minor represented by her next friend Evan Horomanski, filed a personal injury lawsuit in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio against KitchenAid, Inc., Whirlpool Corporation, ABC Company #1-10, and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield.

The complaint alleges that on June 6, 2023, a KitchenAid mixing bowl attachment exploded during normal use, causing serious injuries to Leighton Horomanski. The product was originally purchased as a wedding gift for her parents and had been used without issue until the incident. The plaintiff claims that the defendants were responsible for designing and manufacturing an unreasonably dangerous product. “The mixing bowl attachment was prone to unreasonable and unexpected explosions,” states the complaint. The lawsuit further accuses KitchenAid and Whirlpool of negligent failure to warn users about known defects in their products.

Plaintiff Leighton Horomanski is seeking damages exceeding $75,000 for medical expenses, pain and suffering, and loss of enjoyment of life due to potentially permanent injuries sustained from the explosion. The complaint also demands that Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield assert any subrogation rights related to medical payments made on behalf of Horomanski or be barred from future claims.

Representing the plaintiff are attorneys Joel A. Buckley, Monica L. Carson, Michael S. Kahan, and David M. Jones from Jones Kahan Law LLC based in Cincinnati, Ohio. The case has been assigned Case No. 5:25-CV-2728.
