A Wood County resident has been sentenced to two years in prison for defrauding a Toledo-based technology company. Blake Underwood, 45, of Perrysburg, Ohio, received the sentence from U.S. District Judge Jack Zouhary after pleading guilty to wire fraud. Following his prison term, Underwood will also serve three years of supervised release.

Court records show that Underwood worked at Nemsys, LLC, an information technology company located in Toledo. After the owners of Nemsys moved to Florida to focus on another business, Underwood was promoted to CEO and managed the company on their behalf. Between December 2019 and April 2023, Underwood carried out a scheme in which he used company funds for personal expenses without authorization.

According to evidence presented in court, Underwood spent money intended for revitalizing a historic property in Toledo on building supplies for his own home. In addition, when the owners reviewed the company’s poor financial performance in 2023, they discovered that Underwood had used company funds to pay off his personal credit cards and purchase items such as vehicles, golf club memberships, and jewelry.

The FBI’s Toledo Field Office led the investigation into the case. Assistant United States Attorney Robert N. Melching prosecuted the matter for the Northern District of Ohio.
