A Lucas County resident has been sentenced to prison for his involvement in the robbery of a U.S. postal carrier during an official delivery route at an apartment complex.
Damere Wilson, 21, from Toledo, received a sentence of 20 months in prison from U.S. District Judge Jack Zouhary after pleading guilty in June to charges including robbery of mail, money, or other property of the United States, stealing mail collection box keys, and mail theft. In addition to his prison term, Wilson will serve three years of supervised release following his incarceration.
Court documents state that on March 12, 2024, Wilson drove another individual—whose identity remains unknown—to the Piccadilly Apartments in Oregon, Ohio. The unidentified person approached a United States Postal Service letter carrier who was delivering mail, pressed a hard object into the carrier’s back, and demanded the mailbox key. The letter carrier complied under threat of violence and handed over the key before the suspect fled. Wilson then drove this individual away from the scene.
Authorities executed a search warrant at Wilson’s residence in Toledo and recovered the stolen postal key along with more than 200 checks totaling thousands of dollars. These checks belonged to over 100 victims of mail theft across northern Ohio.
The investigation was conducted by the United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) and the City of Oregon Police Division.
Assistant United States Attorney Frank H. Spryszak prosecuted the case for the Northern District of Ohio.
