Joseph Gunter, a 41-year-old resident of Albuquerque, New Mexico, received a 28-year prison sentence from U.S. District Judge Charles E. Fleming. This follows Gunter’s guilty plea in February to charges related to the sexual exploitation of a child and transporting a minor with intent for unlawful sexual activity. Post-imprisonment, he will be under lifetime supervised release and must pay $5,000 in restitution to the Amy, Vicky, and Andy Child Pornography Assistance Act and $10,000 to the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act.
The case unfolded when a 12-year-old girl was reported missing on September 21, 2023, in Ashtabula County, Ohio. Investigations revealed that she had been communicating online with Gunter from Albuquerque. Authorities located his vehicle in Gray County, Texas during an extensive multi-agency investigation involving state and federal agencies. The victim was found inside along with two firearms.
Court documents disclosed that communication between Gunter and the victim occurred over several months via Twitter. Despite attempts by the victim to cease contact by deleting her account, Gunter managed to reconnect with her through a new account she created. On the day she went missing, Gunter allegedly threatened her at gunpoint to enter his vehicle before taking her across state lines for sexual purposes.
The investigation involved multiple FBI divisions including Cleveland Division as well as local sheriff’s offices from Gray County (Texas) and Ashtabula County (Ohio). The prosecution team consisted of Assistant United States Attorneys Margaret A. Kane and Michael Sullivan.
