United States Magistrate Judge Elizabeth Preston Deavers presided over her final naturalization ceremony on February 26, 2026, in Columbus, Ohio. The event marked the end of her 16-year tenure on the federal bench. More than 50 individuals became new American citizens during the ceremony.

To commemorate the occasion, Judge Preston Deavers invited participants from EveryBody Works—a program that combines secondary education and vocational training for people with disabilities—to observe the proceedings from the jury box.

Judge Preston Deavers addressed the petitioners, stating: “The petitioners range in age from 22 to 84, which means some of you came to America as children, holding tightly to your parents’ hands as you arrived in another world, and some of you came as adults, leaving behind everything you had in pursuit of another life. And while the stories are your own, you represent a mixture of culture and talents that have contributed so much to our society.”

She noted that while her judicial duties included making significant decisions such as signing warrants and overseeing criminal and civil matters, naturalization ceremonies were a highlight of her service.

During her remarks, Judge Preston Deavers reflected on American history: “Many of the founders of our great nation were born in foreign countries, and many were soldiers who fought in the Revolutionary War to secure our freedoms. From the start, then, American citizenship has not been limited to those fortunate enough to have been born in this country, and the founders wisely provided for the process of naturalization.”

She continued by emphasizing America’s identity: “We are, of course, a nation of immigrants, with very few exceptions… Our nation has been and continues to be enriched by the hard work and talents, and the diversification of cultures by persons from other lands around the world.”

After administering the Oath of Allegiance, Judge Preston Deavers was honored with a standing ovation from the new citizens. They presented her with a card signed by all participants and a large potted plant as tokens of appreciation. Family members and friends attended as well. The ceremony concluded with Judge Preston Deavers joining new Americans for a group photograph.
