David M. Toepfer has officially assumed the role of United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio. He was sworn in by Chief U.S. District Judge Sara Lioi at the U.S. Courthouse in Akron, following his appointment by U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi on July 23.
Mr. Toepfer’s nomination by President Donald J. Trump is still pending in the United States Senate. “It is the honor of a lifetime to serve the people of Northern Ohio in this role,” said Mr. Toepfer. “Our office will continue working with our federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to protect the public by aggressively enforcing the laws of the United States.”
The district under Mr. Toepfer’s jurisdiction covers 40 northern counties in Ohio, serving nearly six million residents from offices located in Cleveland, Akron, Toledo, and Youngstown.
Mr. Toepfer has been part of the Northern District of Ohio since 2008 as an Assistant United States Attorney and has held various leadership roles within the office, including branch chief for Youngstown and Akron.
His legal career spans nearly three decades with significant experience prosecuting federal criminal cases such as bank robbery, firearms offenses, fraud, narcotics, and export-controlled technology.
Before joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Mr. Toepfer worked as an assistant prosecuting attorney in Trumbull County and Portage County in Ohio.
In 2010, he received national recognition with the Director’s Award from the Department of Justice for his work leading a violence reduction program targeting offenders who illegally used firearms.
A native of Warren, Mr. Toepfer graduated magna cum laude from Youngstown State University with a degree in Business Administration and earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Akron School of Law.
This appointment marks a historic moment as it is the first time in over 117 years that a lawyer from Youngstown will serve as U.S. Attorney for this district.
